Case study
Electrical connections are a fundamental part of complex submarine engineering. The customer's programme calls for specialist wiring that can be manufactured consistently and integrated into a wider system with confidence.
Depending on where the assemblies are used, operating conditions may include vibration, mechanical shock, temperature changes, moisture and electromagnetic interference. These conditions shape how the electrical interconnections are designed and manufactured.
Engineering considerations
- Connections and terminationsAccurate crimping, soldering, connector installation and strain relief contribute to consistent assembly workmanship.
- Build repeatabilityLoom construction, cable placement and inspection need to reflect the customer's detailed requirements.
- Electrical integrityInspection and electrical testing provide checks on the quality of finished interconnections.
The manufacturing brief
ASL was awarded the contract to manufacture the assemblies. They are built at its factory in Bolton, which covers 30,000 square feet. The work is supported by an ISO 9001-certified quality management system and operators trained to the IPC/WHMA-A-620 standard. Every assembly is 100% electrically tested before it leaves the factory, keeping the focus on consistent, verifiable connections.
